Jenny’s Blog: Hotels that do good – Attitude in Mauritius

In a world where sustainability can sometimes feel like just a buzzword, it’s always refreshing to find a hotel chain that truly puts its values into action. Attitude Hotels in Mauritius is exactly that - a collection of eight 3* and 4* properties that not only offer memorable holiday experiences but also actively contribute to the local community, economy and environment.

As a travel specialist, I’m always on the lookout for destinations that offer the right balance of fun, relaxation and value. While I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the beautiful Indian Ocean island of Mauritius before, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to stay at an Attitude Hotel, but I’ve heard great things and have been keeping an eye on them following a recent introduction.

What I find especially appealing is that they cater to everyone, from couples to families with children. The all-inclusive packages are a big bonus, especially when you consider they can sometimes be priced similarly to a European holiday. It’s incredible value with that extra exotic touch and an opportunity for a range of authentic experiences.

Of course, the beautiful beaches, bluer-than-blue pools and dine-around options are reason enough to choose Attitude for your Mauritius getaway. But what really sets them apart is their deep commitment to making a positive impact on the island.

From the reusable Dopper water bottles provided to guests, to the locally crafted furnishings in every room, Attitude Hotels show how tourism can be done responsibly.

You won’t find single-use plastics during your stay - guests are encouraged to visit the Bulk Shop and fill up on essentials like coffee, tea and snacks in reusable containers.

Attitude are deeply connected to the island’s local culture, and I love how they work with the Mayaven family to source fresh fruit and salad. They also support local artists and musicians, and the spa only uses natural ingredients from Mauritius’ lush La Vallée de Ferney.

For those interested in eco-tourism, a visit to the Marine Discovery Centre at Lagoon Attitude is a must. You can learn from marine biologists about the island’s rich marine life and even get involved in research projects, like photographing humpback whales on a sustainable whale-watching trip. Kayaking tours through the mangroves, snorkelling along their underwater trail and upcycling art classes are also available.

Otentik Experiences

Even more special is the Otentik (authentic) experience programme, which invites guests to engage with the local culture and environment in truly meaningful ways. Every activity is designed to deepen your connection with the heart of Mauritius. The two that stand out to me are...

Otentik Dinner

This is a unique chance to dine with a local family, help prepare a traditional meal, learn about the island from those who know it best, share stories and perhaps enjoy some live music or dancing, too. It’s a cultural experience that would be incredibly enriching, especially for families.

Otentik Discovery

Explore the vibrant street food scene in Port Louis. Attitude Hotels even has its own app to guide you through self-guided walking and cycling tours, making it easy to wander through the city, sample the best food and admire the street art.

The Attitude Hotels

Each of the eight Attitude Hotels has its own unique charm, but here are two of my top picks:

The Ravenala Attitude

Located on the northwest coast in Balaclava, The Ravenala Attitude is a fantastic option for families. The all-suite hotel is set in lush tropical gardens and borders the serene Turtle Bay.

The name ‘Ravenala’ refers to the traveller’s tree (or traveller’s palm), easily recognised by its striking, fan-shaped arrangement of long leaves.

It features inviting pools, a beautiful beach and a wide range of activities, including a kids' club and a fitness trail along the river. Plus, it’s conveniently close to Port Louis.

The dining options at Ravenala Attitude are impressively diverse, catering to every palate with nine restaurants, including two exclusive adults-only venues.

Whether you're enjoying the laid-back vibe at the Beach Bar, indulging in Italian favourites at A Tavola, or savouring the exotic flavours of Mauritian cuisine at Kot Nou and the Asian-inspired dishes at Madame Ming’s, there’s something to suit every taste.

Sunrise Attitude

For those looking for a more tranquil, adults-only experience, Sunrise Attitude on the east coast is perfect. Positioned across from the stunning Belle Mare Beach, this hotel focuses on helping you reconnect with nature and yourself.

The décor mirrors the natural beauty around it, featuring soothing shades of leafy green, earthy terracotta and mustard, complemented by Mauritian architecture that emphasises natural materials.

The no-TV concept, swim-up rooms and private villas with pools make it an ideal retreat for anyone needing to unplug and reconnect.

It’s a serene space, ideal for honeymooners or anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

At Sunrise Attitude, how about greeting the dawn on the beach, with a DJ softly guiding the morning as the music crescendos alongside the sunrise? Whether you choose to dance, relax or simply absorb the energising vibes of nature, this is a truly magical way to begin your day.

When it comes to dining, you can experience a variety of delicious dishes and authentic street food, including a wide range of vegan options. From covered market-style Mauritian eateries to laid-back spaces perfect for unwinding after a day at the beach, Sunrise Attitude provides a unique culinary experience.

And with their Dine Around experience for half-board guests, you can enjoy sampling different restaurants throughout your stay, adding even more variety to your holiday.

Looking Ahead

Excitingly, Attitude Hotels are also expanding beyond their Mauritius base, with plans to open a new property in Zanzibar in 2025. I’ll be keeping a close eye on this exciting development, and I can’t wait to share more news when the time comes.

If you're interested in Attitude Hotels or a trip to Mauritius, please get in touch. I’d be delighted to help you experience the magic of Attitude for yourself.
